The magic lever: How to make your business’ marketing more effective

Most founders think marketing is the problem, or the fix for it. Usually it's neither. It's the visible end of a business, so it takes the blame. But the thing that's actually broken almost always sits upstream, in strategy, operations, or a brand with no foundation under it.

Key ideas & takeaways

Marketing is at the sharp end of everything — it's the visible part of a business, so it takes the blame when things go wrong. But being visible doesn't make it the cause; it just shows a problem exists.

Strategy and tactics aren't the same thing — strategy is the hard, unglamorous work of finding the problem and the fix; tactics are the outputs (the website, the emails, the posts). Most people buy the tactic and skip the thinking.

Brand is the foundation; marketing is the amplifier — turn the volume up on nothing and you've still got nothing. Amplify a weak product and you just reach the "this is awful" verdict faster.

Founders can't see their own upstream problems — too close, too busy, too invested, and too hopeful that a tactic will paper over the cracks. Part of the job is holding up the mirror.

Be the doctor, not the pharmacy — clients turn up self-prescribing ("I need TikTok videos"). A good consultant diagnoses before handing over the medicine, because the marketing won't work until the upstream issue is fixed.

AI is a tactic dressed as a solution — nobody ever had an "AI problem." It sits far downstream of strategy, and using it just means amplifying faster. If there's nothing worth amplifying, that's all it gives you.
